What Are Vintage Fish?

These are fish prints, pictures, drawings of fish found in the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. Back in late 18th and early 19th century there were limited photos; in order to identify or describe fish species typically relied upon an artist to draw the fish. These artists were employed as conservationist, naturalist, scientist, medical doctors, explorers, and even children authors to portray the accurate beautify of the fish they encountered. It was also a very important part of early Ichthyology. Don't forget that these fish weren't just hanging out waiting to be painted or sketched; it required a avid angler/fisherman to catch all of these fish! This is one of the notable differences between this research versus other animal prints. Understanding the history behind the efforts to catch and document these fish is very interesting.

Where do you find Vintage Fish?

Many of the antique and vintage fish prints are found in antique stores, rare book dealers, yard sales, and libraries. As mentioned since many of these are over 100-150+ years old they are not in the best shape. Many of the "illustration" pages were typically taken out of the books, have water stains, rips, faded, and other damage over time. We have gone through the effort of sourcing a collection and restoring these wonderful illustrations to preserve them and make them available for others to enjoy before they completely lost over time!

What are the Vintage Fish sold in the collections and catalogs?

These consist of reproduction prints that were found, digitally imaged, enhanced, and optimized to improve the artistic work for others to enjoy. On occasion original prints will be sold and explicitly noted. We are focused on preserving the original prints by offering reproductions. This largely prevents originals from being destroyed as they are often sold individually.

What paper is used for prints?

We performed extensive research and testing to determine the best quality paper to print these beautiful works of art. The older prints we collect are printed on vintage paper which unfortunately fades and turns yellow over time. We wanted to preserve the artwork without sacrificing image clarity and quality. We printed these on traditional art poster paper, but unfortunately found that these prints were very thin and prone to bending. Using other types of traditional matte paper allowed the ink to bleed and was not as well preserved. We selected PROFESSIONAL Premier Color Paper with a Fine-Grained Lustre. The prints result in very high quality, accurate representation of the works, and increased longevity and durability. The paper is considered the gold standard for print quality with more vibrant colors to create more compelling prints that accurately preserve these works of art. These cost a bit more than regular paper prints, but are significantly better quality. Additionally, these prints are shipped in a sturdy flat envelop that is bend-proof and marked fragile, ensuring the prints stay as flat as possible to preserve the artwork and avoid the challenges of poster paper in cardboard tubes. Folks say that we have the best quality prints available!
